Within the lifetime of any field production the ratio of gas/oil/water being produced will change, these changes may be gradual or sudden, but with these changes the interactions of the fluids will alter and the issues associated with achieving the desired export/discharge/re-injection specification will change, some of these changes will and can be assisted by chemical optimisation, some of these changes will require equipment modifications and often existing plant can be optimised to provide better performance.

The changes in the behaviour of the process can be assessed by detailed examination, analysis similar to that undertaken for a new field development, and this analysis will allow decisions to be made on the best solution either mechanical and chemical optimisation or changes to equipment and chemical treatment.
